Pokémon Go Weekly Challenge, including Weekly Challenge rewards

How does Weekly Challenge work?

Weekly Challenge allows Pokémon Go players to come together to complete a specific challenge in return for some rewards every week.

Yet, at the time of writing, Weekly Challenge is experiencing a phased rollout, beginning in New Zealand and it's now available in Australia, after being disabled from Pokémon Go due to bugs shortly after its original launch in October 2025.

Still, it's worth taking a look at how Weekly Challenge works in Pokémon Go for when it does return to the game.

On this page:

Update November 2025: Weekly Challenge is slowly being released worldwide via a phased rollout that began in New Zealand and is now available in Australia.

Pokémon Go Weekly Challenge explained: How Weekly Challenge works

After a very rocky launch that led to it being disabled, Weekly Challenge has now entered a phase rollout period. This means it has been released in New Zealand first and will gradually become available again in other regions until it's once again available worldwide. (Though hopefully without the whole impossible-to-close-pop-up this time round...)

As of Wednesday 19th November, Weekly Challenges are now available in Australia. This is slower rollout compared to past Pokémon Go features - most likely to avoid any more bugs - so I'll keep this page updated as this new feature is gradually released across the world.

If you were affected by this Weekly Challenge bug when it was first released, you'll receive up to 6,000 Stardust and 20,000 XP as compensation. If you were forced to leave a Weekly Challenge mid-way, you'll receive the difference up to 6,000 Stardust and 20,000 XP.

While we wait for this feature to be released globally, let's take a look at how the Weekly Challenge is meant to work…

The Weekly Challenge allows up to four Pokémon Go players to work together to complete one overall challenge every week. Said challenge changes on a weekly basis; it could focus on catching Pokémon one week, then be about spinning PokéStops the next.

Every Weekly Challenge will begin and end of the following time depending on your region:

  • UK - Every Monday at 1am (BST / GMT)
  • Europe - Every Monday at 2am (CEST / CET)
  • East Coast US - Every Sunday at 8pm (EDT / EST)
  • West Coast US - Every Sunday at 5pm (PDT / PST)

Keep in mind you can only join one Weekly Challenge group per week. In turn, this means you can only complete one Weekly Challenge per week.

How to create a Weekly Challenge group

To create a Weekly Challenge group, you need to visit the 'Social' tab in your Trainer Profile. Once there, you need to select the 'Choose Group' option under the current Weekly Challenge.

Doing so will bring you to the screen where you can select which players you wish to invite to your group. Remember - each group can contain up to four players, so this means you can invite a maximum of three players to your group. This does by selecting the buttons listed in the 'Invite Friends' box.

Once you're happy with the players you've selected, press 'Create Group' to send out those invites. Now you just need to wait for the players to respond!

The 'Social' tab is also where you'll be able to track your group's progress with the Weekly Challenge, including the overall progress and how much each player has contributed.

How to join a Weekly Challenge group

To join a Weekly Challenge group, you need to be invited by the player who's created it. When this occurs, you'll receive a notification about the invitation and will have 24 hours to respond if you do want to join. Letting this time pass without responding will cause the invitation to expire.

No matter whether you've created or joined a Weekly Challenge group, once you're in one the goal is to complete the challenge. So get out there and start playing Pokémon Go! Again, you can check your progress by visiting the Social tab.

The High Voltage event is currently running. There's a lot to do in Pokémon Go outside of the current event! First, it's worth learning about the level update. After this, you might want to fight in the Go Battle League, use Party Play, compete in a PokéStop Showcase or explore a Route for its Gift Exchange. Keep an eye out for rare Pokémon and don't forget to collect Max Particles, so you can battle Dynamax Pokémon in Max Battles.

Pokémon Go Weekly Challenge rewards explained

Completing a Weekly Challenge before the deadline arrives will earn you the following rewards in Pokémon Go:

  • 20,000 XP
  • 6,000 Stardust
  • Extra Friendship Level points

Thanks to allonsygeronimo7 on The Silph Road subreddit, we know you could earn seven Friendship Points for completing a Weekly Challenge. Though this was before the feature was disabled, so it could change when Weekly Challenge returns to the game.

When Weekly Challenge does return, however, it will be a good way to earn some extra XP! Not only is 20,000 XP an excellent reward for completing tasks you'll be doing anyways in Pokémon Go, but the additional Friendship Level points could come in handy if you're close to reaching a new Friendship Level with one of the players in your group.

Best of luck completing every Weekly Challenge! (When it's back in the game.)
